Connections

Slack

How an admin connects Slack for the workspace, which channels Goose reads and remembers, and asking @goose questions in Slack.

Slack isn't switched on in every workspace yet. If your Settings › Integrations page has no Slack row, it isn't available to you.

Slack has two parts:

  • The workspace connection, under Organization. An admin connects your Slack workspace once, and chooses which channels Goose reads.
  • Your Slack account, under Personal. Each person links their own Slack account so @goose can answer them in Slack.

Connect Slack (admins)

  1. Open Settings › Integrations.
  2. On the Slack row under Organization, press Connect, and approve Goose in Slack.
The Slack row on Settings, Integrations, before Slack is connected, with its Connect button.
Slack is connected once for the whole workspace, by an admin.

Only an admin can connect Slack. Everyone else sees Ask an admin to connect Slack. Once it's connected, the row shows your Slack workspace and who connected it.

Which channels Goose reads

Press Configure channels on the Slack row. Under Channels Goose reads, choose one of three ways:

  • Everything: all public channels, existing and future. Private channels need an invite.
  • Choose channels: only the channels you select.
  • Name patterns: public channels whose name matches a pattern, for example deal-*. You can also add exclude patterns.

Your changes aren't saved until you press Save. Re-scan refreshes the list of channels from Slack.

Goose doesn't read direct messages.

Which channels Goose remembers

Reading a channel and remembering it are two separate choices.

  • Reading a channel lets Goose notice what's happening on your deals.
  • Adding it to memory makes its messages searchable by everyone in your workspace, and lets Gus quote them in answers.

Under Channels Goose remembers, every channel starts off, public ones included. An admin turns on In memory for each channel, or presses Add all public channels to turn on every public channel at once. A switch saves as soon as you flip it. Adding a private channel, or all public channels at once, asks you to confirm first.

Private channels

Goose can't see a private channel until someone invites it.

An admin decides whether members can add their own private channels, with the Members can add private channels switch on the Slack row. When an admin first connects Slack, it starts off. Once a member adds a private channel, an admin can turn on In memory for it, and then anyone in your workspace can get what's said there through Gus, including people who aren't in the channel. If the workspace reads Slack with Choose channels, an admin also has to tick the channel for Goose to read it.

To add a private channel you're in:

  1. Under Personal, find Private channels in Your Slack account. If it says Your admin hasn't enabled private channels., ask an admin to turn on the switch.
  2. Press Authorize. This is a one-time approval in Slack that lets Goose list your private channels and send the invites you pick.
  3. Press Pick channels, tick the channels you want, then press Apply. Goose asks you to confirm, because the channels can become visible to everyone in your workspace through Gus. Press Add channels.

If an admin later turns the switch off, Goose leaves the private channels members added and stops reading them. What Goose Brain already read from them stays.

Ask @goose in Slack

  1. Under Personal, on Your Slack account, press Link your Slack account and sign in to Slack. The card then says Linked as @ followed by your Slack name.
  2. In Slack, mention @goose in a channel it's in, and ask your question.

@goose answers in a thread. It searches what your workspace's Goose Brain knows and can list your team's meetings. Answers use only what everyone in your workspace can see: it lists shared meetings, and only tells you how many personal meetings you have, never what they are. The answer ends with its sources.

If you haven't linked your Slack account, @goose replies asking you to link it first.

In a channel Goose isn't reading, @goose sees only the message that tags it, and says so at the end of its answer.

To stop @goose answering you, press Unlink on Your Slack account.

Common snags

  • The Slack row says Ask an admin to connect Slack. Only an admin can connect it.
  • @goose doesn't answer. Check that @goose is in the channel, and that your Slack account is linked in Settings › Integrations.
  • @goose says it doesn't know. It only knows what's in Goose Brain. A channel's messages are only there once an admin adds the channel to memory.
  • The Slack row says Reconnect needed. An admin presses Reconnect on the Slack row.
  • @goose stopped answering everyone. Slack may be disconnected, or the admin who connected it left the workspace. An admin presses Reconnect on the Slack row.
